In the 1960s, Soviet-Jewish artist Anatoly Kaplan, one of the great Jewish artists of the 20th century, created a series of eight color lithographs dedicated to Jewish Folk Songs. The retrospective of his work is currently taking place at The Beit Avi Chai Gallery in Jerusalem. Kaplan's artworks are not illustrations; rather, they are a bold attempt to use artistic imagination to create a "folklore canon" of Jewish song in the Soviet Union.
Sixty years later, it is not only Kaplan's artwork, but also musicians from Russia who have now arrived in Jerusalem.
Beit Avi Chai presents The Ashkenazi Deconstruction Ensemble led by Grigory Sandomirsky, winner of the Independent Music Awards.
With participation of multimedia artists Ilya Kreines and Maya Adar Walling, Yiddish culture researcher Yaad Biran and author Roee Chen, the musicians present an original interpretation of Jewish Folk Songs based on Kaplan’s art.
