We will follow the trail of Byzantine stories which were borne westward both by traveling Greek clerics and by pilgrims returning from the Holy Land. Here they re-surfaced in medieval England and France and were transformed into ‘Marian Tales’, primarily because of their religious messaging and moral lessons concerning the Virgin Mary. The fact that this was contemporaneous with the emergence of a new way of thinking about Jews in Europe, would have dangerous repercussions.
